Breast cancer is a cancer that develops in the cells of the breasts. You will be surprised to know that breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but extremely rare in men.
Even in India, breast cancer has become common in women, and health associations like ICMR have shown concern about spreading awareness about breast cancer. With concerned research and advancement in treatment techniques, the death rate due to breast cancer is steadily declining, in which early detection plays the most important role.
Basically, all types of breast cancers are divided into two categories; Invasive and Non-invasive or in situ. While invasive cancer spread through ducts or glands to other parts of the breast, non-invasive cancer cannot spread from the original tissue.
Ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS is a non-invasive condition, in which cancer cells remain confined to the ducts in the breast and do not affect the surrounding breast tissues.
In LCIS, the cancer cells grow in milk-producing glands of the breast. Like DCIS, these cancer cells do not invade the surrounding tissue.
One of the most common types of breast cancer, IDC begins in your breast’s milk ducts and then spread through nearby tissue in the breast. It may also spread to other nearby organs and tissue.
The ILC first develops in your breast’s lobules and starts spreading to the nearby tissue.
The very rare type of breast cancer, Phyllodes grow in the connective tissue of the breast. Most of these tumours are benign, and very few of them are cancerous.
This rare type of breast cancer grows in the blood vessels or lymph vessels in the breasts.
The Paget disease is a type of cancer that develops in the ducts of the nipple but slowly grows to affect the skin and areola of the nipple.
Some more types of breast cancer:
One of the rare-type of cancers, this form of cancer affect about 10 to 20 per cent of people.
IBC is an aggressive type of breast cancer that affects 1-5 per cent of breast cancer patients.
This is the name given to stage 4 breast cancer that reaches to other organs and parts of your body from your breast.
Yes, the male breast cancer exists as men's nipples and surrounding areas are also having the same tissues as women. Very rare, male breast cancer also comes up with the same symptoms.
Breast cancer stages:
Stage 0 breast cancer
DCIS is termed as 0 stage cancer, and cancer cells in DCIS remain confined to the ducts in the breast and do not spread into nearby tissue.
Stage 1 breast cancer
Stage 1A and Stage 1B are two stages of the stage 1 breast cancer, where stage 1A’s cancer is confined to the tumour itself while stage 1B can reach to the lymph nodes.
Stage 2 breast cancer
The stage 2A’s tumour is less than 2 cm and has spread to 1-3 nearby lymph nodes, or the tumour is 2-5 cm and hasn’t spread to any lymph node.
The stage 2B’s tumour is between 2 to 5 cm and already spread to 1-3 axillary lymph nodes, or it’s larger than 5cm but not spread to any lymph node.
Stage 3 breast cancer
Stage 3A’s cancer spreads through 4-9 axillary lymph nodes or enlarges the internal mammary lymph nodes, while primary tumour is of any size. Stage 3A tumour also defines its tumour with a size of greater than 5 cm and has spread to 1-3 axillary lymph nodes or any breastbone nodes.
Stage 3B denotes that the tumour has invaded the chest wall or skin and may or may not affected up to 9 lymph nodes.
Stage 3C is spread to 10 or more axillary lymph nodes near collarbones or internal mammary nodes.
Stage 4 breast cancer
