Skin Disease Vitiligo: Cause-N-Cures

There are several diseases present in the world that affect the natural human skin like acne, psoriasis, eczema, etc., but today, we are going to explore more about another disease that causes the skin to lose its natural hue, i.e. vitiligo.

What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo disease is a long-term condition that causes white patches to develop on the skin. Basically, it causes loss of pigment in the skin which happens due to Melanin pigment being destroyed in certain areas of the body.

It can affect any area of the skin all over the body, but it commonly appears on the face, neck, or hands of people suffering from it. Sometimes it is also found to develop near hair roots causing the hair to go white.

Fortunately, it doesn’t cause any discomfort to this skin like dryness or rashes but sometimes the patches can get itchy. Also, it is not a contagious disease.

Types of Vitiligo spots

Vitiligo can be focal or may affect several different areas of the body at the same time.

What is the cause of the skin disease Vitiligo?

The lack of pigment in the skin called Melanin can result in Vitiligo. In normal conditions, Melanin is produced by skin cells called Melanocytes that give the skin its colour. But, Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system destroys pigment/colour producing cells present in the skin and hair.

There are other factors too that can cause you the disease, like:

  • Other members of the family suffering from it
  • A family history of other autoimmune conditions
  • You yourself suffering from an autoimmune condition like thyroid dysfunction

What can be sought as Vitiligo treatment?

Though Vitiligo can’t be cured, it can be treated so that person can lead a good quality life. The treatment plan is decided after taking into consideration the number of patches and their spread over the body.

There are several options that you can go for in order to treat Vitiligo, like:

  • Medications – creams that can be applied or tablets to be taken orally
  • Phototherapy is another option
  • Sugical treatments like grafting and tattooing of smaller affected areas
